01. Male Allies

The equivalent page in Spanish is here

Although we are told that we live in "post-feminist times", as we watch pornographic representations of women in the media becomes increasingly more frequent, pornography (and increasingly violent, brutal pornography) is available to very young boys and girls through the internet & sado-masochism is increasingly portrayed as sexual liberation.  We might think we are individually not affected or responsible if we don't personally engage in any of these practices, but in fact violence against women is on the increase, and that affects all of us.

Men need to take up the fight against sexism alongside women, now more than ever, if we are to reverse these trends, and this is a call to our male allies.

And it is important for women to know that we do have male allies: that there do exist men fighting violence against women, and they don't do it to "be seen as good boys" or to further demand the attention or approval of women but for the same reason feminist women do: because sexism is a dehumanizing oppression at the root of , and it has to stop.  And because sexism doesn't affect everyone equally, it is the most privileged (the ones who have less of the burden of sexism to bear in their everyday lives) who have most of the responsibility for ensuring the end of this violence.

"Like women, men have been socialized to passively accept sexist ideology.  While they need not blame themselves for accepting sexism, they must assume responsibility for eliminating it. ... Men are not exploited or oppressed by sexism, but there are ways in which they suffer because of it ..."

5 Ways Men Can Help End Sexism

YouTube Video

What role should men play in working towards an end to sexism? How much or how little should men be helping? In this video we will explore answers to those questions and share a few suggestions for how men can respectfully approach feminism. We also explain why ending sexism can be beneficial for men too!

This is the 2nd Feminist Frequency video hosted by Jonathan McIntosh which addresses men and sexism. The 1st video highlights the “25 Invisible Benefits of Gaming While Male” and you can watch that one here:

Pornography Is What the End of the World Looks Like

by Chris Hedges

"“Fifty Shades of Grey,” the book and the movie, is a celebration of the sadism that dominates nearly every aspect of American culture and lies at the core of pornography and global capitalism. It glorifies our dehumanization of women. It champions a world devoid of compassion, empathy and love. It eroticizes hypermasculine power that carries out the abuse, degradation, humiliation and torture of women whose personalities have been removed, whose only desire is to debase themselves in the service of male lust."

Thankfully there are other wonderful male allies fighting alongside female feminists to end this vicious cycle of violence, so horribly 'normalized' in our culture.

Fundamentally, porn, like any other drug, disconnects us from ourselves, and from other people, the planet and our souls.  And to that extent it harms us all, as it dehumanizes us.

It's one of the many, many drugs civilization has invented to keep us numb, dumb, and powerless to change this sick system into something more rational, humane and creative.
